Global Trade Solutions sectoral insights series – Commodities

  • Article

Hong Kong is strengthening its position as a premier Asian hub for commodity trading and financial services. This is supported by the city’s proximity to Mainland China, world-class financial infrastructure and common law system, recent policy and market developments.

The London Metal Exchange (LME) confirmed the approval of Hong Kong as an LME warehouse location in 2025. Through Hong Kong, LME is providing warehouse facilities closer to the metals hubs of mainland China1. Momentum is also being reinforced by Hong Kong’s proposed tax concession measures which will introduce a half-rate tax concessionary regime for commodity trading business2. Together, these developments position Hong Kong as an increasingly important bridge between global capital and Asian commodity flows, reshaping how traders finance, store and move commodities across the region.

Commodity markets remain dynamic, shaped by shifting demand and supply patterns

  • Metals: Iron ore flows into China remain stable amid uneven demand3, while copper continues to benefit from structural demand driven by electrification and data-centre build-outs4.
  • Agriculture (Soybeans): Soybeans face logistics friction, including higher freight and input costs, plus tighter inspections, that will drive landed-cost volatility5.

As commodities remain central to a rapidly evolving global economy, businesses need the agility and confidence to respond to volatility. In this environment, global trade solutions provide the financing, risk management and liquidity tools needed to support resilient supply chains and enable seamless trade across markets.
